Is anyone else psyched for Tron Legacy, Disney's sci-fi sequel to the original 1982 Tron movie? Opening in theaters nationwide in December, the sequel stars Jeff Bridges, who reprises the role of hacker Kevin Flynn. While it's unclear if designers were specifically inspired by this Eighties cult favorite, electric blue and meteoric swirls appeared all over the runways.

After what seems to be an interminable obsession with miniskirts, the fashion pendulum has swung again to embrace the longer hemline of 1950s aesthetics. Fashion editorials recreating the idyllic tongue-in-cheek idealism of Leave It To Beaver abound, announcing yet another reason for women to shop. But while this new conservatism is a refreshing directional change (I am the first to admit that I was tiring of the hard-edged rocker chick look), I am reminded of something that George Taylor, a Wharton School of Business economist, noticed in the 1920s: when hemlines rise, so does the economy.

The converse, according to Taylor, also applies, which, if we were to follow his "Hemline Theory," indicates that the fashion gods have predicted an upcoming economic slump. While fall collections tend to be darker, more subdued than spring collections on average, it's hard to deny the newfound classic quietness that dominated the shows. Whether this change is a result of sobering fiscal harbingers or fickle fashion fatigue, it's unclear how many women will embrace this slightly awkward hem length and how and when fears about the economy will fall away.

While I relish the ease and freedom of summer, I dislike dressing for the hot stickiness of summer. Most of my clothes tend to be ornate, heavy, and formal--perfect for the cold wintry months but the very antithesis of easy summertime dressing. With only three pairs of shorts in my closet (I need to buy more shorts!), I find myself limited to a couple of summer uniforms: a) a thin dress and sandals and b) a shirt (preferably collarless, like the one above), shorts, belt, and gladiator flats.

Every time I wear my BCBG finger ring, I always receive numerous compliments for its unusual design. While the Gaia Repossi version is also a beautiful version, I personally prefer the BCBG version--the pave sparkles against the gold finish. It also has a hidden hinge in the middle, which makes it extremely comfortable--even when typing. Best of all, it won't break the bank.

Moiselle: A Serendipitous Hong Kong Find

When I went to Hong Kong for spring break this year, I chanced upon Moiselle, a Hong Kong-based Asian brand that's ubiquitous in all of its many malls (seriously, Hong Kongers put Americans to shame when it comes to shopping--I've never seen so many Chanels, Pradas, and Guccis!). While the brand's price point could be categorized as "contemporary," its quality is much more luxe--think rich tweed jackets, supple silk blouses, impeccably tailored coats, and dramatic evening gowns. I certainly wanted to buy everything in the store, but I limited myself to two blouses: one blue and black silk top with multiple cut-away layers, and the other a simple (at least on the front) black tank with an intricate design of shredded, patterned strips along the back (I've never seen anything like it before). I'm envious of Asian women who have daily access to this brand--I'm surprised it hasn't arrived on Western shores. See the website for more covetable styles.

I immediately fell in love with these chocolate leather shorts from Zara, but regrettably refrained from purchasing it for the following reasons:

1. Poor Sizing: It comes in only two sizes: small and medium, and the small fits like a large or an extra large.

2. No Belt: It doesn't come with the belt in the photo, nor could it be found in the belt section.

3. Fit: After thinking that maybe it only needs a belt to give that "paper bag" effect, I realized it looked terrible no matter how I styled/wore it. I could be wearing a potato sack (and yes, I did see the Project Runway episode about potato sacks) and look less ridiculous.

Alas...if anyone knows of a better fitting alternative, I'm all ears.

Ever since I saw this stunning pair of Christian Louboutin booties on Street Style London, I was smitten. The booties, however, are unwalkable (they pinch in the front like so many Louboutins). Thankfully I found this highly versatile and comfortable wedge version that I can wear all year long.

While I usually don't shop too often at Forever 21 (clearly, I am no longer 21), I did pop my head in recently and was surprised to find this adorable cardigan at a ridiculously low price. Although I initially thought that I was buying leopard at the tail-end (no pun intended) of the craze, Alber Elbaz's pre-fall Lanvin collection confirmed that leopard's not going away anytime soon--which is fabulous since I've just fallen in love with it.

Traditionally, I've been a solids gal with a particular penchant for neutrals and the occasional, but conservative, bright hue. Lately, however, I've found myself gravitating towards all things psychedelic, tribal, and animal. With the newfound surge of optimism that dominated the spring runways--and, for some, the stock market--, designers and shoppers alike have bought into the hope that prints sartorially represent. The ubiquitous leopard print from fall has now evolved into something wilder, something freer: eccentric pattern mixing; feral and tamed animals alike coexisting; and ladylike and hyperbolic floral versions. My most recent purchases testify to this attraction: a tiger-print bubble skirt from Miu Miu, a leopard-print camisole from YSL, a green and gray cubist blouse from Christian Cota, and an asymmetrical zebra sweater from a local boutique. And with the lure of these gorgeous spring prints, I have a feeling that this attraction won't end anytime soon.

FAVORITE THING #2: Sci-fi movies. For those of you who scoff at the idea of Star Trek, let me present to you Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (whose title, I might add, is an allusion to Hamlet's "To be, or not to be" monologue; in Hamlet, "the undiscovered country" is death; in Star Trek, it's the future). This movie really is an allegory of Cold War politics, but it's so much more than that. It addresses our natural racist inclinations and fear of annihilation--so apt today. (I just saw 2012 and The Road--it seems like Hollywood isn't letting up on the apocalyptic theme.)

FAVORITE THING #3: Brunch. Let's face it. I'm a brunch junkie. These delectable blueberry pancakes and the french toast in the next picture are both from Zoe, a restaurant in Soho.

FAVORITE THING #4: Korres. I'm really picky about lotions (I have extremely dry skin), and Korres' Jasmine (or Guava) body butter is insanely rich, fragrant, and healing. I'm also addicted to their shower gel and lip balm.

FAVORITE THING #5: Murad. While we're on the subject of beauty products, let me introduce you to Murad's Clarifying Cleanser. Great for people who have mild to severe acne.

I'm obsessed with the idea of a fur vest, and this one by Alexander Wang is quite substantial; it's warm enough to wear as a coat or as a chic layering piece over a leather jacket on brisk fall days.

My husband took me to Spice Market, a trendy Asian-fusion restaurant in the Meatpacking District, for my birthday.

This row was the only empty section of the restaurant when we got there. By the time we left, it was completely filled up.

A friend suggested that I post about my regular haunts in Chinatown. My husband and I absolutely adore Yeah Shanghai Deluxe, an unassuming gem tucked away on Bayard Street.

Making soup dumplings in the storefront window

Crab soup dumplings, or xiaolongbao, miraculously contain hot delicious soup in their core. Lightly sprinkle one with the ginger soy sauce dip, place this ball of goodness on your spoon, take a small bite out of the top, and sip the soup before you enjoy the yummy crab meat and chewy dough. (If you don't like crab, they have a pork version that's equally popular.)

Beef with Bean Curd over Rice

Right next door, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory has amazing home-made ice-cream with a slew of exotic flavors for even the most jaded ice-cream eater. I personally love the red bean flavor.

Chinatown has several of these candy/dried fruit emporiums. I managed to get one shot of the display case before the saleslady barked at me. I got 1/4 lb of the dried plum and dried yam.

Green Tea Cafe has the best bubble tea, in my humble opinion.

A quick perusal of my closet will unequivocally remind you that I am a New Yorker: a torrent of black, a deluge of gray, and a barrage of denim dominate my limited storage space with occasional but meager sprinkles of color. Like the atmospheric amnesia I suffer every fall (is this what 38 degrees feels like?!), I am reminded by the recent cold, premature blast of winter how dark my sartorial choices have been lately.

It's undeniable that the fashion gods have dictated that fall 2009 would be a season of black. (Remember, they were designing when the economic gloom was at its peak.) Admittedly, I was lured by the promise of the easy chic: black goes with everything; black is edgy; black is the new black. Now, looking at my shadowy wardrobe and sighing through the spring runway shows, I am seduced by the promise of warmth and the color of joy. Alexander McQueen's psychedelic sci-fi dresses, Lanvin's candy-colored jeweled concoctions, and Proenza Schouler's tribal blues and greens all signaled a meaningful industry reappraisal of the power of--and need for--bright colors.

Of course, this newfound worship of all things color does not mean a scorn of all things black. When the winter chill pierces the bone, somehow a suit of black armor seems like the most appropriate choice when facing the elements or huddling with a crowd of fierce fellow New Yorkers, who are all, like me, secretly dreaming of spring.

Decades Two, an upscale consignment store in LA, decided to fly to NY for a weekend-only grand sale in Soho. My electric blue YSL vest is one of my most prized sartorial possessions, so I thought I'd add another YSL vest to my collection.

I apologize for being MIA this past week. I've been swamped at work and preoccupied at home. Last weekend, I went to Five Points with one of my dearest girlfriends. I'm always looking for a quality brunch place, and Five Points, an excellent restaurant in NoHo, did not disappoint. We also heard that Gossip Girl stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley were there the week before!

I can't live without pancakes, and these Lemon Ricotta pancakes were delectably moist and sweet without being overwhelming. My only complaint? No fresh fruit.

Mac 'n Cheese at its finest. If you're the type who lives for real cheese--the smelly kind that's imported from idyllic farms in Europe--then your taste buds will burst into song at the first bite of this cheesy goodness. But as a person who eats relatively less than the average person, I do recommend three dishes for two people, as each entree was quite small.

Although I'm not one for formulas--I teach English, not Math, after all--, I do appreciate the familiarity, versatility, and ease of a blazer, top, skinny jeans, and heels (throw in a colorful scarf or belt for distinguishing details). When in doubt, I wear the uniform, which works for day or night.

IFB: When Bloggers Descend En Masse

Last night, I attended the Independent Fashion Bloggers' "Dress-Up Soiree," which consisted of a panel discussion (featuring prominent bloggers) and an after-party. Although I arrived (fashionably?) late, I was stunned to see a monstrous line down the street. The venue was ridiculously incapable of supporting the hordes of bloggers that eagerly attended (look at the above picture to get a sense of the size of the room), and as a result, people crowded into the bar (located downstairs from the panel) and drowned out the panelists. Nevertheless, the real highlight of the night was getting to finally meet so many amazing and super-friendly bloggers!

As I suspected, Fashion's Night Out was more about partying and celeb gawking than an actual shopping event. Most people were too busy schmoozing and drinking (I've never seen so much free booze before) to shop. In some over-crowded stores, one could hardly get a glimpse of the racks. Nevertheless, the real success of the night was probably to dispel the sartorial guilt that most people have endured over the last few years. The message was loud and clear: It's no longer insensitive to shop to your heart's content.

I must say that my initial reaction to news of Fashion's Night Out, Vogue and the fashion industry's attempt to spur fall sales, was that of skepticism. A night of shopping and fashion parties? Big whoop. I like to shop without crowds and with sales. But I must say I was a little stunned when I learned about the extent, variety, and incentives of this global fashion party.

According to Racked, Anna Wintour will be at Macy's (in Queens); Narciso Rodriguez, the Proenza Schouler boys, Thakoon Panichgul, Jason Wu, and Peter Som will be at Kirna Zabete; Hamish Bowles will be at Juicy Couture; Alexa Chung will be DJing at Miu Miu; Annie Leibovitz, Padma Lakshmi, Zac Posen, Donna Karan, Alexander Wang, and other designers will be at Bergdorf Goodman engaging in games, cook-offs, and talks; the Olsen Twins will be DJing at Barneys along with Isabel Toledo and Alexander Wang giving runway lessons and Juan Carlos Obando giving salsa lessons. And this is just a sampling of the heavy hitters coming to promote this event.

What about other incentives? Customize your t-shirts and Havaianas at Adam Lippes' store; design your own Chanel bag while enjoying a free manicure; take your photo at H&M (for a chance to have your picture projected onto a giant billboard); audition to be a model at Alice + Olivia; and enjoy live Irish music at Rag and Bone.

The real question is this: Will you attend, and if so, will you shop? I wonder if this clever marketing ploy will actually compel you to open your wallet--or will it only be a night of celebrity gawking accompanied by moonshine and music?

Believe it or not, yours truly actually owns a pair of Doc Martens. I know--this is shocking in a my-world-has-flipped-upside-down kind of way. But before you take this random fact to its semi-logical conclusion, bear in mind that these were from the 1980s. That's right. The 1980s. Why do I still have them, you ponder (when it's so obviously NOT my fashion aesthetic)?

Well, to be honest, I used to wear them as rain/ snow boots (as some of you know, they're indestructible). I find it equally astounding that these are "in" again. Sure, I understand that the fashion zeitgeist has decreed that anything rocker, edgy, and grungy has returned at full tilt--and I am sure that there are some among you who love this look. But I find it personally difficult to adopt this mode of fashion, probably because I still see teenagers today wearing this look in all of its goth glory. How about you: do you find this look appealing, and if so, why? Do you have any words of wisdom to challenge this Doc Marten-prejudiced fashionista?

...they'd look like these Chanel lovelies, complete with chain detailing, a sweet bow, a wearable 3" heel, and the cap-toed interlocking Cs! In all honesty, Chanel shoes (and Prada/Miu Miu ones) are enormously wearable and impeccably made. Although Chanel will, like other designers, create sky-high heels, the brand still makes comfortable shoes every season for the practical fashionista. (These booties are made with a cushion right at the arch for extra support!)

Thanks for the sweet comments about the MIA Oscar booties. I do find it odd that they weren't "purchased" by any of the Oscar boutiques. Please let me know if you espy them anywhere!

I was tempted to call this post "Teachers Everywhere Are Suffering From a Mild Depression" because I go back to school this Wednesday. It's always sad to say goodbye to a deliciously long, carefree summer (although I do work every summer, it does not compare to the usual stresses of a typical school year). Last night I finally went to see the last production of Euripides' The Bacchae, playing at the Delacorte Theatre (Shakespeare in the Park's second play of the summer). The parallels between that gruesome play and my HBO addiction True Blood are uncanny! And what's particularly odd is that someone screamed in the audience after the character on stage did--only to ask for help. A commotion ensued, and when we were exiting the theatre, we saw an ambulence on its way. I can only hope that that person was okay.

One of my lovely house guests thoughtfully gave my husband and me tickets to see Next to Normal, a Broadway musical about a dysfunctional family's struggle with mental illness and loss. Out of all of the musicals I've ever seen, this one has got to be the darkest. Several people near me in the audience were sobbing!

The actress who plays the mother, Alice Ripley, stole the show. It's not surprising that she won the 2009 Tony for the Best Actress in a Musical.

After the show, the cast members came out to sign playbills. This pretty girl is Jennifer Damiano, who plays the neglected, screwed-up daughter.

Last Wednesday, my house guest and I went to hear Nobel-Prize winner Toni Morrison talk about her latest book, A Mercy, with NPR's Michele Norris at Barnes and Noble.

This was my second time hearing Ms. Morrison live (the first time was at the New York Historical Society), and once again I was moved by her gentle strength and crackly voice.

I'm supposed to reveal "Ten True Things About Me," so here goes:

1. I've had two near-death encounters, both with moving vehicles (#1 involved a car crash in which I totaled my car, and #2 involved a bicycle crash on a Hawaiian volcano). I'm very happy to still be alive.

2. Since I was a child, I have had an acute aversion to physical exercise. I've never liked playing sports, but if I had to choose, I'd pick any sport in which the moving object/ball travels away from me (e.g. archery, bowling), rather than toward me (e.g. baseball, basketball).

3. I am almost fanatical about sunblock. Sometimes I wear sunblock over my SPF-laden moisturizer.

4. My favorite fruits are blueberries, mangoes, and pomegranates.

5. My favorite meal of the day is breakfast, but since I'm too lazy to cook that early, I have to wait until weekend brunch. My all-time favorite meal would entail a sampling of all breakfast-related foods.

6. I am NOT a picky eater. In fact, I will eat almost anything (provided it isn't an insect, rotten, or still alive).

7. I am addicted to True Blood. Team Eric!

8. When it comes to movies, I have eclectic taste. I enjoy everything BUT horror movies.

9. I love Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and most sci-fi/fantasy movies. I can say "To be, or not to be" in Klingon. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is one of my all-time favorite movies.

10. I am the middle child in my family.

Although thigh-high boots have been associated with women of the night and other scantily clad, morally questionable females, this seemingly daunting new fall accessory trend is actually very wearable--and done right, one needn't anticipate wanton cat calls by seedy men. The key is coverage: wear them with longer tunics/mini dresses, shorts with tights, and skinny pants/jeans/leggings. The extra layer of leather will keep you looking warm and chic in the upcoming chilly months. Personally, I think suede versions are less intimidating and more flexible; don't hesitate to wear a suede pair with your au courant leather shorts. Choose flat versions to lessen the sex appeal for more wearability.

Some High/Low Options:

1. Dolce Vita "Stud" OTK Boots, $355: These remind me of Chloe's starburst shoes from a few seasons back. You can kill two birds with one stone with these (studs and OTK boots).

2. Steve Madden Xcept Black Suede Boots, $299.95: The platform and heel on these add interest.

3. Chanel Lambskin Cap-toe Thigh-High "Paris-Moscou" Boots: These babies are on my wish list. (Actually, nearly everything from the Paris-Moscou line is on my wish list.) The decorated wedge heel is what makes these not only wearable but also very unique.

4. Guiseppe Zanotti Suede Platform Boots, $1,225: Yes, they're quite expensive, but you're getting your money's worth with Zanotti. His shoes are extremely well made, not to mention gorgeous and comfortable.

5. Guiseppe Zanotti OTK Croc-Embossed Boots, $1,225: I couldn't resist adding another pair of Zanottis. I'm a sucker for any animal skin, embossed or real.

After enjoying our early dinner, we watched District 9, Peter Jackson's most recent sci-fi movie about aliens in Johannesburg, South Africa. A die-hard sci-fi lover, I was initially hesitant about this movie, but it did not disappoint. A. O. Scott's cogent review does retell most of the movie's plot, but his last line certainly captures the heart of the movie: "It suggests that sometimes the only way to become fully human is to be completely alienated." The movie is more than an action-packed sci-fi thriller (although it certainly is that); it explores humanity's savagery (with historical undercurrents of apartheid and xenophobia) and possible redemption. Using aliens as a metaphor, District 9 is really a movie about mankind.

After neglecting all of my dainty jewelry for some time now, I decided to follow fellow blogger Marian--who is the queen of mixing and matching jewelry--and stack my bracelets for a chunky, funky vibe. Individually, each piece runs the risk of seeming too precious in today's hard-nosed fashion climate; together, they add a certain heft that works to neutralize some of my more feminine looks.

On my way to the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe in the Lower East Side for the Moth Story Slam, I passed by this droll metallic sculpture garden. The garden itself was gated, so I had to stick my camera through the bars to get some shots.

For those of you who don't know, The Moth, a not-for-profit organization, hosts regular story slams in different venues around the city. Storytellers must prepare a concise 5-minute story on a particular theme (last night's theme was food) and submit their names in a hat before the show begins. Ten names are randomly selected throughout the night. Judges rate them on various criteria (my friends and I were selected last night to judge!), and the winners from each slam go on to the Grand Slam for a final showdown. The stories were hilarious, poignant, ironic, and well crafted--everything that reminds you why people love a good story told face to face.

Blogger Meet Up: Lynn from All Things NYC

After meeting the fabulous Wendy Brandes earlier this week, I channeled my chutzpah and decided to ask Lynn from All Things NYC to (bubble) tea. I've admired Lynn for some time now; her style is eclectic, professional, chic, and enviable. She graciously agreed to meet me at Saint's Alp Teahouse for some addictive bubble tea and toast with condensed milk. (For those of you who don't know, bubble tea consists of Chinese milk tea, either cold or hot, with tapioca "bubbles" that one slurps through a large straw. I usually don't get the bubbles, though.) Lynn's charming and sweet personality--not to mention her gorgeous smile--immediately won me over.

We took a shot together, but my photoshop skills are pretty nonexistent so I couldn't edit my face out of it. Here's what I wore:

Although this may be surprising, I rarely wore belts ten years ago. For some reason, belts perplexed me until I realized that high-waisted ones suddenly improved nearly every outfit I wore. It's been true love ever since. I hope that these tips help you rethink the power of a good belt.

REASONS WHY EVERY WOMAN SHOULD OWN A BELT:

1. Belts cinch you in and instantly make you look thinner.

2. Embellished belts are like jewelry for your clothes and add interest to a plain outfit.

3. Belts draw attention to a woman's waist, which is usually the smallest part of a woman's body (in comparison to the shoulders and hips); they instantly create a sexy, chic hourglass figure.

4. Belts work on nearly every frame (exception: women who are apple-shaped: widest in the middle).

5. Belts create a sense of proportion. According to Tim Gunn, every woman should adhere to the rule of 3: one should break up an outfit into three parts (head to waist, waist to knee, and knee to foot), rather than into two parts.

6. Belts help to disguise problem areas. For women with short torsos, a low-slung belt creates the illusion of a longer waist; for women with long torsos, a high-waisted belt creates the illusion of a better-proportioned body.

HOW TO WEAR A BELT:

1. First, figure out which type of belt works best for your body type. As I mentioned before, wear a high-waisted belt if your torso is long or proportionate; wear a low-slung belt if you're short-waisted. Consider whether a wide belt or a thin belt works better for you. In my opinion, larger women should avoid thin belts.

2. Don't be afraid to experiment with belt types: exotic, embellished, metal, or fabric. Studded accessories are particularly popular for fall. Although belts with more details and better materials can be expensive, consider them just as much the investment as a good bag or a pair of shoes.

3. Some clothing ideas:

A. Choose one in a different color to break up a monochromatic or patterned dress, like Anna dello Russo does here.

B. Wear one over a long tunic or vest.

C. A wide belt looks great with a tucked-in top and skirt, especially a bubble or A-line one.

D. Use one to cinch in a voluminous dress or tunic, as Hanh is demonstrating here:

E. Play with textures, as Lynn (from All Things NYC) does here. I love her combination of a colored tweed shift with a playful, metallic animal belt.

F. Be creative! Lynn also found an obi belt made out of two men's silk ties.

Every now and then, my husband and I like to go to Cafe Katja in the Lower East Side for some amazing, hearty Austrian comfort food. It's quite the neighborhood gem.

The amazing beet salad...I used to detest beets (I never ate them growing up), but I have grown to love them.

A freshly baked pretzel with some tear-inducing mustard sauce on the side (I swear there's wasabi in it!). And of course a meal would not be complete without a sweet and slightly bitter ambrosial drink.

We passed by this gnarled and misshapen tree outside of Le Petit Puppy, an upscale puppy pet shop on Christopher Street in the Village.

Thanks again to Nini and Chickdowntown for these wonderful boyfriend jeans! I originally won the Skinny/Slouchy ones, but they ran out of my size (hence the boyfriend jeans). Lately, I've been obsessed with cuffing my jeans and my long jackets. I do recommend wearing heels or something dressier (like a jacket) with a pair of boyfriend jeans to contrast their casualness.

My other current jeans obsession is the new "it" style: motocross jeans. The knee detailing, stitching, and seaming add a subtle rocker vibe that is very au currant.

You may remember this skirt from an earlier post, but if not, it was A-lined and several inches longer. Here I am wearing it a few months ago:

Although I have a considerable number of A-line skirts, I've been drawn to the pencil shape for some time now--which is why I decided to change the shape of this skirt. It's always felt a little too long, but more importantly, the lace had the potential of looking too dowdy for its own good.
~
In my "shop your closet" post, I talked about the possibility of altering one's clothes as a way of breathing new life into the garment. But it's important to consider these points before doing so:

1. Make sure you know what you want before you go to the tailor. (I'm reminded of the time I went to the hairdresser with no definite idea in mind...to this day I have been regretting that decision.) Although your tailor certainly has good ideas, sometimes in your insecurity you cave to whatever your tailor suggests--and you may regret it. Think it through carefully before you allow someone else to put scissors to your clothes.

2. Consider whether you want this alteration to be permanent. In a hemming job, you don't have to necessarily commit to the length if you expressly tell the tailor to keep the material (he/she would simply fold the material up and sew it down). One day, you may want it longer again, and it's quite simple to undo the sewing to lengthen the garment. Other jobs, such as tapering an item, are often permanent. Make sure you have an informed conversation with your tailor.

3. Always try on the garment with the tailor present. Even if you pin the garment to the appropriate place, it may not actually be the exact length you wanted or indicated. The tailor has his/her method for indicating the appropriate changes.

4. Speak up if something is too tight or not tight enough, or if the length bothers you--even if it's a fraction of an inch difference. Also feel free to speak up if an alteration job is not to your satisfaction. Recently, after my tailor took in a pair of jeans, I noticed some gaping fabric in the back. I asked him to redo it (and he did it at no extra charge).

5. Shop around. My dry cleaners can clean clothes fine, but the tailor who works there is quite bad. As a result, I patronize a tailoring-only business that also works with the top fashion houses during Fashion Week. They're not cheap--but I know that I'm getting quality service. Remember that simple jobs can often be done at a local dry cleaners, but for more complicated jobs (and with delicate or ornate clothing) you may want to go to a professional.

The title of this post celebrates what makes our day and age postmodern: the mixing of disparate influences. (Have you seen an Anime film called Cowboy Bebop? It manages to brilliantly mash Western, manga, sci-fi, and hip-hop traits all in one film.) I was tempted to call this look "frou frou," though, since despite the cowboy sandals, it's still very feminine (one reason why I rarely wear this dress). By the way, I chopped off a huge amount of fabric on this dress--its long length swallowed me up and turned it in an (unwearable) evening dress. I've recently become obsessed with altering my clothes, but I'll post about that later.

So I decided to take my own advice and resurrect these Prada sandals I've had for years. I was reminded why I wore them nearly to death when I initially purchased them: they're comfortable, chic, and versatile. Every woman should own at least one pair of silver shoes.

We spent part of the afternoon reading in Bryant Park. About a month ago, my husband received a free Kindle in the mail (another company/credit card perk), and I have been hooked ever since. Although I have my gripes about it (no page numbers; formatting issues), it really is quite an amazing device. And classic novels, like Anna Karenina, are usually free!

What "Shop Your Closet" Really Means

Case in point: A perfectly fine cropped satin Rachel Roy trench that hasn't seen the light of day in months

You've heard fashion editors and bloggers alike talk about the new "it" thing to do in this recession: "shop your closet." But what does it really mean?

If you're like me, you've got loads of inventory (yes, think of it as a warehouse that's been stocked) with nothing to wear. It's time to rethink the "more is more" shopping philosophy that is so seductive and reconsider what we already have in our over-stuffed closets.

I propose the following steps:

1. If you haven't already, organize your closet by item type (jackets, blouses, tops, etc.) and then by color (neutrals first, for example, then colored items) for easier and faster sorting.

2. Make a list of everything you own on a word document, spreadsheet, or a sheet of paper.

3. Highlight everything that you haven't worn in over 4-6 months (of course, some items are heavily seasonal, so if it's summer and you're looking at a winter item, approximate the number of times you wore it last winter).

4. Sit down and write down a list of reasons why you haven't worn that item. Doesn't fit? Itchy? Doesn't go with anything? If it's not worth keeping, donate it or swap that item with a friend. But before you're too quick to part with it, remember that once upon a time you bought it--you spent your hard-earned cash on it. Consider ways of redeeming it:

a. Doesn't Fit: Could a trip to the tailor amend that problem? Even if it's small, some tailors can take an item out, depending on the amount of fabric in the seams. (If it's itchy, a tailor can add lining too.)

b. Looks Dowdy: Hemming a long, matronly skirt may just be the thing to revive that long lost item. A tailor can taper a pair of pants to make them "skinny" or he/she could crop them.

c. Doesn't go with anything: This one is the big challenge--one that requires you to think outside the box. Look to other fashion blogs out there for inspiration. A multicolored top? Pair it with a neutral pant or skirt. An old vintage jacket? Pair it with distressed jeans.

5. Continue to make a list of everything that could be worn with that item (an extension of 4c). If it's a top, think of every possible bottom that could be worn with it (jeans? flared trousers? harem pants? skinny pants? a skirt? shorts? jumpsuit?); if it's a bottom, think of every possible top that could go with it.

6. Test drive those looks in the mirror. Eliminate bad pairings and record the good ones for later use. (Trust me: even though this is time consuming, knowing what works and what doesn't saves time in the future.)

7. Sometimes, you have to buy a few items to ensure the longevity and use of the other ones you already have, but I do recommend going cheap here or being wise about how you drop your dough. For example, perhaps a pair of distressed jeans are just the thing to update several existing pieces in your closet. Or maybe some cheap chains at H&M, F21, or Urban Outfitters would alter the overall effect of some more conservative items.

8. Remember, it's okay to store your vintage items for a rainy day. Not everything you own is currently trendy, but I firmly believe that in fashion, "everything old is new again." Whatever dated item in your closet will, like Lazarus, rise again.

If you haven't heard, Gap is currently featuring a drool-worthy collection from Alexander Wang, Vena Cava, and Albertus Swanepoel (known for his hats), winners of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards. Like a devoted fashionista, I arrived twenty minutes early to get my hands on the collection. Surprisingly, the line was quite small, and as I got there, I glimpsed for the second time in under a week the immaculate Anna Wintour as she said goodbye to Alexander Wang. Normally shy around celebrities, I channeled my chutzpah and asked for a shot with the adorable designer. He was quite gracious!

Apocalyptic Beauty?

Christopher Kane Resort 2010

Although Christopher Kane claims that the subversive and disturbing images on his quite pretty and feminine dresses were from "images of nuclear test explosions from the fifties to the seventies," one can hardly divorce those "test" images from the actual ones resulting in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb explosions in 1945 that killed over 200,000 people. For a certain generation, those images are akin to our more current ones of two planes piercing the Twin Towers (and imagine the outrage if that image was used as fashion's canvas).

But this is Christopher Kane: his spring 2009 collection featured close-ups shots of growling apes (from Planet of the Apes), and he won over fashionistas everywhere with the charm of a troglodyte (remember King Kong? We're Ann Darrow in his hairy grip). Despite all of the shock and indignation that his Resort collection incites, it also musters our admiration, awe, and wonder, as if some beauty is possible in this decimated afterglow. It reminds me of a Pixar movie that I finally saw that earned my disgust despite its widespread popularity: Wall-E. The ominous wasteland of endless trash; the obese, paralytic, and horizontal television-watching humans; the humane machines that are, ironically, more human than the actual ones: these apocalyptic messages awoke in me a kind of existential antipathy I had not expected when I sat down to watch a family-friendly film. Of course, as my brothers rightly pointed out, the redemption that arrives in the shape of a fragile plant in a boot does speak to some hope. Perhaps the future isn't as bad as it seems. Perhaps some beauty can be found after all.

I certainly hope that this is Kane's message. The last two looks do resemble a floral sky, and if one blinks, those earlier images of war and destruction fade away.

I fell in love with Miuccia Prada's spring Miu Miu collection, and this dress, which took its inspiration from large Roman tile prints (see the two heads?), is so striking in its color palette and design (you can't see the back from these photos, but it's completely black).

On a side note, two days ago I managed to see Anne Hathaway in Shakespeare in the Park's production of Twelfth Night. For some reason, I've seen at least five productions of this play, and this one was by far the best one I've ever seen. Anne Hathaway was simply radiant as Viola/Cesario. For those of you who don't know, Shakespeare in the Park is a free, high-quality summer theatre series in New York City that attracts at least one big name each summer (Liev Schreiber enacted Macbeth recently); the only impediment is the interminable wait to procure tickets (I usually have to wait 6 hours to ensure a seat). As an added bonus, I giddily espied Hugh Jackman and Anna Wintour in the audience! (He's my imaginary celebrity husband. Wait. It's a tie between him and Christian Bale.) Oddly enough, Prince Edward (Queen Elizabeth's third son) and Miss America happened to be at my school the same day. I couldn't believe I saw five celebrities in one day!

In this dismal economy, it's perfectly understandable for one reader to ask about inexpensive shoe options. Here are some pointers about shoe shopping:

1. Nine West, Aldo, Steve Madden, and Enzo Angiolini have budget-friendly shoes with high fashion styles (many of them actually mimic high-end designer fashions), but keep in mind that many times, these shoes may not be as comfortable or high-quality as designer shoes (I warrant that this is not always true, as I have seen poorly-made expensive shoes, but generally, this is the case). If you want a trendy style that will be worn for one or two seasons, these brands provide good options.

2. Keep in mind that you can purchase higher-quality shoes during sale seasons for similar prices as the brands listed above. Many designers have diffusion lines (lower-priced or contemporary lines) that are in the $200-300 range. Some of these include BCBG, Kors by Michael Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and See by Chloe. Tory Burch, Pedro Garcia, Coach, and other contemporary designers also have high-quality shoes for lower prices than high-end designer ones (I'm waiting for those green Coach beauties to go on sale).

3. If you live in NYC or LA, check out sample sales for inexpensive shoes. (I have seen Devi Kroell python shoes for under $100.) Of course, if you don't live anywhere near a major city, check out online sample sales: The Outnet (Net-a-porter's discount site), Billion Dollar Babes (slashed contemporary goods), and Gilt Groupe** (this site is for discounted high-end goods). If you live near an outlet, such as Woodbury Commons, you're sure to hit upon a veritable mother lode of discounted goodies. If you aren't squeamish, check out your local consignment store.

4. Consider investing in expensive, well-made shoes that will last years to come. My YSL Tribute platforms are incredibly well made. Although I "walk like a horse" (to use a friend's self-disparaging comment) and tend to ruin cheaply-made soles, these shoes hardly look it after a vigorous walk down NYC's mean streets. They are worth the expensive price tag. (Many women can hardly stomach the thought of spending that much on a single pair of shoes, but if they add up the price of several of their cheaply-made shoes that wear out very quickly, it would equal those and last longer.)

5. Take care of your shoes to make them last longer. I know this has nothing to do with purchasing "inexpensive shoes," but I think care is another important element to consider when thinking of your shoes. I used to horribly mistreat my shoes: I'd wear them in the rain, day after day, etc. Make friends with your local cobbler to add a protective sole (to extend the shoe's life), repair ruined soles, and shine them when they get dull. Wear rain boots in rainy weather, and purchase two types of shoes: nice ones for work or special occasions and durable, cheap ones for wear-and-tear situations. Knowing how to take care of your shoes ensures more use and pleasure. And we all know that shoes bring pleasure to the fashionista within each of us!

I apologize for the lack of posts recently; I'm fiercely finishing up my grading for the school year, which means copious exam marking and report card commenting. (In truth, grading has got to be my least favorite aspect of teaching. I really envy college professors who have graduate student assistants.)

Back to the post...I've recently rediscovered the joys of shorts (I've lifted the personal ban against them), but there are a few TF-imposed rules I'd like to share:

1. Shorts must never be an excuse for sloppy dressing. Pair them with something dressier, like a nice top or a structured jacket or, better yet, with stunning heels. (If you can't wear heels with them, at least choose nice flats. Avoid flip flops.)

2. Short shorts should be not be slutty. Please--nobody wants to see your butt cheeks hanging out of them or varicose veins, cellulite, or any other unsightly parts reserved for dark rooms or forgiving lovers. Wear a length that is appropriate to the situation and that's flattering to your particular body type.

3. Shorts should not be expensive; this is not the time to splurge. Look to H&M, Zara, Gap, Old Navy, or Banana for budget-friendly versions that are just as chic as the expensive designer ones. Save your dough for a well-made, structured jacket or a pair of classic pumps.

Last Saturday's weather perfectly complimented another trip to the zoo, this time being the Bronx Zoo. Thankfully, my husband's company sponsored a free trip; otherwise, we would have spent a steep $27 per person (plus extras for the Monorail, the Butterfly exhibit, the Apes, and any food expenses). In the end, however, even an expensive trip to this zoo is worth it; we walked around for at least four hours and didn't even get to see everything.

I bought these gladiators on sale last summer, but they're still available at various department stores (now on sale again). They're pretty indispensable: the neutral metallic shade goes with almost anything, they're comfortable, and the back zippers ensure easy access:

Tired of slipping out of these shoes when walking, I finally headed over to my cobbler for an easy fix to this annoying problem. He gave me these "heel gripper" rubber pads to affix on the inside part of the backs, and they worked wonderfully--at least for the one block I had to walk to get to my building. Let's hope they stay grippy!

When I received this gorgeous dress from my mother, it had no buttons, so I visited a button store in the Fashion District and chose these black and silver ones. To be honest, I was a little stunned that they were so expensive (I had never bought buttons before but I expected them to be quite cheap; of course, this particular dress required eight of them and I bought two more in case I lost any), but in the end, they were worth it. Buttons are enormously transformative! (Imagine sailor buttons...or hot pink ones...you get the idea.)

Dressing these days has been an absolute conundrum; this morning it was a frigid 45 degress, but by the afternoon, it was a balmy 70-something. I passed women on the street in high boots and winter coats and women in shorts and sandals.

Speaking of shorts...I saw the most amazing woman on the street today (unfortunately I saw her from the bus so I couldn't get a candid shot of her) wearing a black blazer, a simple white tank, short jean cut-offs (the length of the blazer just hit the bottom of the shorts), an Hermes belt and Birkin, and t-strap flats. Although this outfit was somewhat basic, she looked so chic and pulled together that I couldn't help but stare. It didn't hurt that she was gorgeous. Personally I'm a bit of a prude when it comes to showing skin--perhaps it's a result of Catholic schooling or being a teacher--so I avoid short shorts like the plague (or swine flu, take your pick). But the idea is quite tempting...

Under the Sea

My husband and I decided to revisit the New York Aquarium on Coney Island--quite a trek from the city! I managed to snap some shots of our favorite aquatic friends before my camera inauspiciously died (so I don't have any outfit pictures, either, sad to say).

We saw a sea lion show, but I'm not sure if it was THIS sea lion. Although I know all about conditioning (I had to take a boring college class on it), it still amazes me that humans can train animals to behave like performers.

In the 1990s, every self-conscious fashionista adorned herself with something that originated in that precious blue box: a silver heart pendant, a chunky chain bracelet with that unmistakable tag chain, a mesh ring. In those days, I remember falling prey to the Tiffany craze, alongside prepubescent spoiled girls who had loaded their arms, fingers, necks, and ears with a treasure chest's worth of baubles. Eventually, the craze had invaded almost every age bracket that eventually, I tired of seeing what now had become generic until I altogether retired those items to some dark crevice in my jewelry box. Despite those romantic posters of a glamorous Audrey Hepburn in front of an equally glamorous window, Tiffany's had, at least for me, lost its luster.

Until now. The sight of these vintage-inspired, elegant Victorian keys--something Miss Havisham would have used--is touching, poignant even. I love the symbolic aspect of these keys, but at the same time they carry a casual tee-shirt and jeans quality to them that attenuates any preciousness they might have originally imparted. They work best, I think, as an old-world accompaniment to a modern outfit: reminders of an enchanted time in a secret garden.

This past weekend I finally visited Topshop (it opened here almost a month ago but the three-hour line discouraged me from stepping foot in it), a store I remember fondly from my London days as a poor study abroad college student. Although I grabbed several promising goodies, I was yet again discouraged by a ridiculously long changing room line, to which I muttered "forget that" and disarmed quickly. As I grunted my way to the escalator, I noticed a stunning gray jacket with exaggerated shoulders in the corner. Barbara Hulanicki is pretty well known in England (she's the genius behind Biba from the 1960s and 70s), and her modest but gorgeous capsule collection is quite reasonably priced, all things considered. Of course, although I admit that the jacket reminded me a little of Balmain, I've always liked an exaggerated shoulder so long as the rest of the jacket is quite fitted. For us pear-shaped gals, the bold shoulders balance out the larger bottom half.

The Grecian trend is one that has slowly morphed into a permanent classic; designers find it a safe avenue to tread every spring. We've seen the current incarnations--the gladiator sandal/bootie and the asymmetrical shoulder--before, but they've taken an edgier, sexier turn lately. These pieces were purchased quite a while back, but they feel au currant. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're extremely comfortable, chic, and lightweight--perfect for this unexpected heat wave!

Of all of my skirts, this one by Fendi has got to be among my top three favorites. Season after season, Fendi produces high-quality, super-wearable and versatile clothing for the modern (professional) woman--and I emphasize woman as opposed to teenager or teeny-bopper. Even though Lagerfeld does inject a bit of whimsical fancy into some of his collections--take the current one for example with its emphasis on cut-outs and doll-like designs--each piece is decidedly grown-up, sophisticated, and, above all, exquisitely made.

The silk weave on this skirt is incredible and extremely tactile. Once, a male student of mine almost automatically reached out his hand to touch the fabric--eliciting, of course, a stunned cry from me. ("What are you doing?!" I screamed in horror, not realizing that his intent was not to actually grab me but my skirt.)

A sign of quality workmanship is the lining: the unseen part of the garment that matters only to the wearer. This silk lining, in a brilliant emerald shade, is as equally stunning as the rest of the skirt (note the little "Fendi" words all over it):
